ACRP Kids team up with the Audubon Society and Home Depot for Bird Study

The Great Backyard Bird Count, is about to begin and the youth of ACRP are getting ready.  The National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab or Ornithology have developed this four day event to engage bird watchers of all levels in watching and counting birds and then reporting their results.  Youth from The Alternative Community Resource Program will meet with representatives from the Audubon Society for a learning segment on bird identification Friday, February 3rd at ACRP/St. Michael’s School in Brownstown.

The Home Depot is also assisting in the project by donating supplies and assisting youth with building actual birdhouses.  Each participant from ACRP will build his/her own birdhouse, and learn what food attracts certain species in our area.

ACRP Kids who are participating in this four day watch are from the ACRP Careworker Program that works with youth, ages 3-17, in the region, and The Accountability Enhancement Program that works with community you and other juveniles.  In addition to being part of a nationwide project, the youth will be learning some basic woodworking and building skills while developing the ability to recognize bird species in their environment, and collect and transmit data.

The ninth annual Great Backyard Bird Count will take place February 17-20.  According to the National Audubon Society, bird watchers sent in over 52,000 checklists with a record breaking 613 species and more than 6.5 million birds counted last year.

The Alternative Community Resource Program (ACRP) is a nationally recognized program serving the needs of youth and families in Bedford, Cambria and Somerset Counties.
