Denver, Colorado. – The Alternative Community Resource Program was named as one of twenty (20) innovative programs serving the needs of children and families with ADHD in the United States at the 15th annual CHADD. (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder) International Conference.  ACRP Executive Director, Frank Janakovic noted that the agency’s community-based Summer Treatment Program (STP) was the recipient of this honor.

Developed by William Pelham, Jr., Ph.D., in 1980, the Summer Treatment Program “Model” is based at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where Dr. Pelham serves as a professor of psychology.  The STP has been named as a Model Program in Service Delivery in Child and Family Mental Health by two separate divisions of the American Psychological Association, and has also received national media attention.  The Summer Treatment Program Model was recognized by CHADD as the recipient of its 2003 Innovative Program of the Year Award.

The unique program places children in approximate groups of 18 with about 6 staff members to each group.  The groups engage in a variety of therapeutic activities that encompass problem solving, social skill training, and clinically based treatment strategies while learning to manage their behavior throughout the day.  Mr. Janakovic was invited to present at this conference due to the time and effort ACRP and Dr. Pelham committed to establish the STP program at multiple sites.  Their work involved taking a clinical based program primarily used in hospital and university based settings, and successfully integrating them into a community setting.  Ninety children received services throughout Cambria, Somerset, and Bedford Counties.
